How to Become a Certified Culinarian
When choosing a Chicago catering company, we encourage you to sample menu items, hear what other clients have to say and inquire about chefs’ credentials. For 40 years, the culinary world has trusted the American Culinary Federation (ACF) to ensure that chefs have all the skills and knowledge needed to provide flawless cuisine for corporate and social events.
The ACF considers both experience and education when determining eligibility for one of its 14 certifications. To become ACF Certified Culinarians, Angelica, Jesse and Alfredo each submitted proof of these qualifications:
- Education: The most common way that chefs meet the minimum education requirement is by holding a high school diploma/GED or 100 hours of continuing education.
- Culinary Experience: Two years as an entry-level culinarian are required, although holding a Culinary Arts program certificate or an Associate’s degree in Culinary Arts can reduce this time.
- Continuing Education: To make sure chefs are well-rounded in their abilities, the ACF also requires three 30-hour courses. These must be in Food Safety and Sanitation, Nutrition and Supervisory Management.
Once the ACF confirmed that Angelica, Jesse and Alfredo had the necessary education and work experience to be Certified Culinarians, they had to prove themselves worthy of this distinction. A written exam and a 2.5 hour practical exam that tests culinary skills and ability confirmed that these chefs’ education and experience serve them well in the kitchen.
Catering social and corporate events requires a high level of talent and expertise in even the seemingly simplest of tasks. That’s why we encourage you to compare what core values and credentials culinary professionals hold. From preparing cold food to cooking the finest meats, the greater Chicago area trusts our Certified Culinarians to deliver delicious food at a reasonable rate.
