How to Host a Toga Party

This party theme was made popular by movie Animal House and has since been enjoyed by numerous social groups and organizations.  For those interested in hosting a toga party, here are a few tips and ideas to maximize your toga party success.

History Behind the Toga
Togas in the ancient Roman times were not made of bed sheets and safety pins like they are today, obviously.  Togas were made of wool and typically draped around one’s body like a tunic.  Men traditionally wore togas and women stolas, and only Romans were allowed to don this particular fashion.

Step 1:  Inviting friends
Toga parties are not good event themes for small, casual parties.  If you are interested in having a larger, more social group of people come to the party, then this theme is perfect for you.  Invite a ton of friends and tell them to invite their friends (and even their friends’ friends!).

Step 2:  Making Your Toga
To make your toga, you will only need a few very simple items.  One: a big piece of cloth or a bed sheet. Two: a handful of safety pins.  Try visiting here for a complete picture diagram of how to securely fasten your toga.

For additional touches to your own costume, men should consider wearing a laurel wreath.  Laurel wreaths are the horseshoe-shaped crowns that most people associate with the image of Julius Caesar.  Women can dress their toga up with gold jewelry.  Both sexes should pair their togas with strappy, gladiator-type sandals.

Step 3:  Food and Drink
The food part of the party is easy because you will not have a sit down dinner or formal itinerary.  Instead, serve light snacks (like potato chips and dip). The drinks are simple too:  kegs, and a few mixed drinks. The number of guests you anticipate can help you judge how many kegs you’ll need. Just remember that you will need to keep the kegs on ice, so have the same amount of ice filled (clean) garbage cans as you do kegs. The entertainment can be as easy as the previous two elements. All you need is a little music and the rest will take care of itself.
