Walk into Tasty Catering on any Wednesday around noon and you’ll find a flurry of activity. Over the company-provided lunch, dishwashers, drivers, chefs, sales staff and company leaders shout out the company’s “critical numbers” which are recorded on a wall-sized dry erase board as part of The Great Game of Business. It’s the starting point for an energetic discussion about how they can bring those very numbers—which is the amount of money spent that week across all departments—down. The staff knows that when costs go down, profits go up, and when profits go up, each and every one of them receives a pre-determined bonus.
