Chicago, IL- October 30, 2012 – Deputy Mayor Steve Koch, CEOs, and HR leaders from local employers gathered today to discuss workforce and educational needs in the Chicagoland area. The CEOs and HR leaders are part of an organization called WorkforceChicago, which was formed to strengthen the Chicago talent pool through a more educated, skilled workforce. Mayor Rahm Emanuel confirmed his support of WorkforceChicago via a pre-recorded video address. The mayor stated, “Nothing is more important to me than having a skilled, educated workforce that out-competes any other city in the country.” Gabi Zolla, Acting CEO of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, explained the education and training challenge Chicago is facing, “Despite record unemployment, 38% of employers have positions for which they cannot find qualified staff. Meanwhile other troubling trends are looming: boomers are exiting, the high school dropout rate remains at 33%, and 40% of those entering community colleges require remediation.
Concerned, learning-oriented companies can help alleviate this problem by supporting training and education for their employees.” In addition to the speeches by the Deputy Mayor and Zolla, senior leaders from both winning companies and other Chicagoland employers spoke of their challenges and successes in educating and developing their employees. Jim Fox, President of Bowling Retail, Russ Lockridge, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer of Brunswick, and Tom Walter, Partner & CEO of Tasty Catering, elaborated on their employee learning and development practices and how investing in education has given them a competitive advantage. Dean Harrison, President and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, addressed the business impact of investing in the workforce. Deputy Mayor Koch presented both Brunswick and Tasty Catering with the WorkforceChicago Award for their exemplary practices in learning and development.
